“Before us is one of Goldoni’s masterpieces, but theaters are in no hurry to put it, largely because of the language of the text. After all, the “New Apartment” is written in a very bright Venetian dialect, which, unfortunately, today is incomprehensible not only to Europeans, but also to Italians themselves. The presence of a decent translation and the fact that the text has never been staged in Russia convinced me that the play has a chance to study and stage.
Created in 1760, Goldoni’s New Apartment can be put in a number of reformist texts. The author made it clear that in his dramas there are characters who are socially and culturally close to the viewer's environment. There is no more room for masks, servants, jokes, lazzi and street scenes of the commedia dell'arte. At the same time, the rules of the “theater book” (as expressed by Goldoni himself) remained: this is a mathematically clear, stylized composition of the play, inherited from the commedia dell'arte. In the world of "New Apartment" it is very easy to take off and fall from the social scale. This is exactly what happens with Andrezoletto and Cecilia, a married couple who decided to housewarming in a battered apartment, which they could not afford to repair.
In general, the scene acquires the features of an endless repair, where something is constantly collected and instantly falls apart. This is like a vicious circle that reveals the eternal contradiction of mercantile thinking, with its inherent dual (and empty) religion of money.
At stake is the future of a whole generation, a whole society that is wasting its days. Hiding behind luxury and renewal, it inexorably goes to the bottom.
In the "New apartment" no children. It does not even have fathers and mothers. The traditional family model is irreversibly lost. Men and women swapped roles, old values were destroyed, and new ones were never created.
I was once told that in this text Goldoni reminds Ostrovsky, in terms of careful attention to the economic and financial aspects of morality. It's true. But he also reminds me of the theater Eduardo de Filippo with its unbreakable combination of illusion and reality, drama and comedy, a constant game between life and theater.
That is why, in my opinion, the time has come to seriously work on this “experimental” text with the actors of the Vakhtangov Theater. Try searching for a common place (and time), somewhere between Italy and Russia, between the past and the present, between stylization and realism.
For me, theater is a territory of revelation, where political, cultural and temporal boundaries are erased and all these categories are open for play again. The theater provides an opportunity for communication, meetings, learning, discovery, reflection and celebration. ”
You get used to good performances (this is exactly about the Vakhtangov Theater), and then BAM! .. and in a seemingly decent place you run into. Even before the quarantine times, a friend took a ticket to the "New Apartment" in Vakhtangov, but it did not work out. And I decided on my own head to fill the gap. The play is based on Goldoni's play. Staged in the style of farce. But such a vinaigrette of images. Here is our quarantine present, and the characters of the Adams family, and Alice in Wonderland. I have mastered the plot by half. I believe that if in the first act there are unhappy lovers, then in the second everything will be happily resolved. I didn't have the strength to watch this nonsense. Complaints about the plot and the production itself. From the pros - historical costumes and selected acting work. The second act was replaced by a walk from Arbat to Polyanka. It was wonderful.
